Many adolescents in our country have psycho-social problems. In adolescence these problems seem unsolvable, but this is not impossible. Have you ever heard about Terre des hommes (Tdh) organization, which is the leading Swiss organization for the protection of children (adolescents)? They have been operating in Albania since 1993 and have a psycho-social focus, helping children, their families and communities in vulnerable situations, helping and contributing to the strengthening of local and national institutions, as well as strengthening the system of protection ofchildren and juvenile justice.to ensure that children are effectively protected, they work in close partnership with institutions, organizations and communities. Their purpose is to ensure that children are effectively protected and that their rights are properly respected. but this organization does not only function for the protection of children or adolescents, it also develops activities that enable the development of their skills.Currently, the projects are focused on young people aged 15-24 are: “Transforming the National Response to Trafficking in Human Beings in and out of Albania", in a coalition led by UNICEF Albania and supported by the British Government – aims to inform the empowerment of vulnerable groups, in order to prevent trafficking in human being in Shkodra, Kukes and Dibra. “Sustainable socio-economic reintegration of returned emigrants to Albania", with the support of the German Government in cooperation with GIZ Albania / DIMAK Albania, which aims at reintegration into society and empowerment of young people from families returned from insecure emigration and in terms ofunfavorable economic conditions in Kukës, Shkodër, Lezhë, Durrës, Elbasan and Fier. “Improving the reintegration into society of children in conflict with the law", in cooperation with the Probation Service and the municipalities of Tirana, Shkodra, Durres, Vlora and Korca.
Terre Des Hommes
The aim of Terre des hommes activities is to empower young people through their reintegration and society and to create employment opportunities, develop professional skills, engage in their communities to bring about positive change, develop life skills, prepare them towards the right career and labor market etc.
Activities that are expected to take place during the summer are in the Multi-functional Community Centers in Shkodra, Kukës, Dibër, Lezhë, Durrës, Elbasan and Fier, we develop psycho-social activities, counseling, life training, etc., on a weekly basis throughout the three months of summer. Also during the months of June and July in Shkodra, Lezha, Kukes and Dibra there will be some youth initiatives undertaken by the youth groups themselves. For services such as internships or vocational courses, their staff must be evaluated in advance to be included in the service (these services target mainly young people from families returning from emigration and those in need). To ensure the protection of minors,they work through three main programs: child protection – To support children who are victims of abuse and violence, they promote improved policies and services, strengthen the child protection system, provide training for professionals, and support the efforts of local organizations on child issues protection through grants. Affected children receive psychosocial services and counseling. migration and anti-trafficking – To prevent insecure migration and reintegration of vulnerable families returning to Albania, they help parents create an income-generating activity, encourage children to attend school or after-school activities, provide counseling psycho-social and support that empower young people as agents of change. juvenile justice – To combat the phenomenon of children involved in conflict with the law inAlbania, they are building youth resistance through an innovative approach at thecommunity level, strengthening the child protection system and working to prevent the return of children inconflict with the law through reintegration programs.
Through this program, Terre des hommes works, among other things, for the reintegration into society of children in conflict with the law in the municipalities of Tirana, Shkodra, Durres, Vlora and Korca. In this second phase, the focus of their intervention will be on providing services to the family as a whole, supporting minors for a longer period of time, as well as increasing the capacity of professionals.
Sildi, is one of the juveniles who received support during the first phase of the project. He is 18 years old from Tirana, he is one of the youngest people in conflict with the law, which is part of the reintegration program in society through professional jobs orprofestsional courses. Sildi has been sentenced twice to imprisonment. He is now serving a 5-year sentence under the supervision of the Probation Service, where he is alsofamiliar with the Terre des hommes project for the reintegration of young people inconflict with the law. He already works at the “House of Colors", where he is engaged in cleaning and maintenance of the environment. Sildi continues to meet regularly with Terre des hommes staff. He says this has not only helped him financially, but also keeps him away from road hazards.
